Exhibition Overview
This exhibition sheds light on a lesser-known yet vital chapter in art history: the story of women’s creativity, ambition, and resilience. It explores how female artists asserted themselves despite societal and institutional barriers, and how their work reflects not only artistic excellence but also the environments and circumstances in which it was created.
The focus goes beyond the artworks themselves to examine the social networks, limitations, and themes these women engaged with. Historically, women faced restricted access to education and professional advancement in the arts. Yet their talent, determination, and drive to succeed remained unwavering.
Among the featured artists are:

• Artemisia Gentileschi, who transformed personal trauma into powerful artistic expression and became the first woman admitted to the Florentine Academy of Arts.
• Sofonisba Anguissola, known for her intimate portrayals, including a notable painting of her sisters playing chess.
• Lavinia Fontana, the first woman to manage her own studio, working on commissions for both nobility and the church, while also raising thirteen children.
• Rachel Ruysch, a celebrated painter of floral still lifes, who gained international recognition and served as a court painter in Düsseldorf.

Together, their stories highlight not only artistic achievement but also the courage and perseverance required to thrive in a male-dominated field
