Prague Spring Meeting: Healthcare and the American System (Tue., Sep. 1, 8 pm)

From: Lee
Sent on: Friday, August 28, 2009 2:03 AM
Announcing a new Meetup for Prague Spring

What: Healthcare and the American System

When: September 1,[masked]:00 PM

Deposit: $3.00 per person

Where:
Lee's Rooftop (32 Stories High)
111 E 85th St (b/t Park & Lex)

Weather permitting, this meeting will take place on Lee's Upper Eastside Rooftop, 32 stories high. The weather looks good now, but if we do the roof, please be prepared for a 5 - 10 temperature feel difference from ground level depending on the strength of the wind. There are picnic tables and deck chairs on the roof, so please feel free to bring your own food and beverages. If the weather does not cooperate, we will meet over Indian food at Taj Mahal at 318 E.6th Street. We will make a decision on location by 5 pm on Monday. Either way, a deposit is required to ensure a seat.

Healthcare and the American System

The view from abroad is that the public desire for universal coverage is turning into more corporate welfare and that madness is leading the public debate. As Bill Mahr said, "The Democrats have moved to the right, and the Republicans have moved to a mental hospital."

So we have a Democratic majority that is fractured and a Republican minority with a disinformation strategy to bring down the ruling party while playing with the health of Americans. Is it because money rules the day in healthcare? Even after Wall Street lobbies almost brought the financial system to the abyss, the healthcare lobbyists prefer to put profits over care. As Chris Hedges quotes Harper?s Index, September 2009 in ?This Isn?t Reform, It?s Robbery.?

> Percentage change since 2002 in average premiums paid to large US health-insurance companies: +87%

> Percentage change in the profits of the top ten insurance companies: +428%

> Chances that an American bankrupted by medical bills has health insurance: 7 in 10

Yet the public can?t see through the propaganda and the media doesn?t help. If only more people tracked Glen Beck as well as Jon Stewart does.

So what is possible in our current political and media system?

Reservation Policy: There is a $3 deposit for this meeting.

If the weather forces us to go to Taj Mahal, please note there is an $18 attendance fee (less the $3 deposit) that provides a 4 course Indian dinner and covers the tax and tip too. (First time dinner attendees only pay $13 total including the deposit. Beverages are extra). To reserve a spot, you must make a $3 deposit through the PayPal link. The deposit allows us to plan on table sizes of 5-8 people, making for discussions that are neither too big nor too small.
