some history -

The importance of this famous junction of the Red and Assiniboine rivers can be traced back 6000 years when it served as an assembly point for the aboriginal people. It was a critical link in the western fur trade and European settlement, and later, a major debarkation point for immigrants to western Canada. Sadly this area lay neglected and deserted for more than half a century. But its value to us has finally come full circle. With the award winning Forks development, the juncture where the Assiniboine River flows into the Red is once again our pre-eminent gathering place.
For walking enthusiasts, The Forks is heaven-sent. Beautifully designed trails, riverwalk paths and foot bridges link The Forks with the rest of the city and make walking to it a perfectly grand experience. When you factor in the many outdoor festivities and celebrations, the unique shops and eateries, as well as exciting new and heritage architecture on these beautifully landscaped grounds, The Forks, becomes a wonderful “destination walk”. All pathways are well lit and well maintained and apart from the spring flood water, provide great walking all year round.

NOTE - All winter walks may be subject to cancellation due to high windchill factors or other extreme weather conditions. Please check back at this site on the morning of the event.
