Same but different! A new purpose for this group, thanks to those who participated under previous organiser and ownership.
What's the new plan?
Simply put, an open group, some of whom visit a different church within the Oxford area on a roughly monthly basis for worship, stay to mingle with the regular congregation over tea and coffee if offered, then attend a local food establishment for a social lunch together.
Why?
- To provide an additional social opportunity for people new to Oxford, or new to or curious about faith, or who may not want to attend church alone, as well as a fun thing for existing worshippers.
- To support smaller congregations with an occasional Sunday morale boost (congregations of under 20 are not uncommon and an additional 6-10 could make a big difference once in a while).
- To expose potential local worshippers who do not have a current church, and students approaching graduation who have worshipped in college but may be staying and looking for a ‘city church’ to a range of possible local churches within our traditions, into one of which they may eventually settle.
FAQ
Can I attend for only the worship or only the meal? Yes, do as much or as little as you are able!
Which churches? In the first instance liberal free churches and Anglican churches which are part of Inclusive Church, to avoid any participants feeling they are at risk of being unwelcome (but vice-versa is ok – people from other churches welcome to join!)
Is this a student and young people thing? Students and young people are welcome, but not exclusively! Students and young people may also wish to be aware of the SCM events: https://www.wesleymem.org.uk/news/activities-for-students-and-young-people.html
Can you come to my church? Subject to the note above, feel free to suggest it!
What if I don't have a church? Then treat this as a great opportunity to explore some churches and see if one of them is right for you :)
