Preparing Our Hearts for Pet Loss
A Support Circle for Pet Parents

You are welcome to join a compassionate support circle for people caring for an aging, seriously ill, or declining beloved pet.

This group offers a gentle space to share the heartbreak, fear, love, guilt, uncertainty, and anticipatory grief that can arise before a pet dies.

Together, we support one another through listening, reflection, mindfulness, and shared compassion. This is not a group for “fixing” grief or rushing anyone to acceptance. It is a place to be understood, to honor the human-animal bond, and to find steadiness while loving a pet through one of life’s most tender transitions.

All feelings are welcome — sadness, fear, anger, confusion, gratitude, exhaustion, and love. You do not have to go through this alone.

What the group can do to be supportive:

• Offer a warm, caring space where people feel safe sharing what they are going through.
• Listen gently and without judgment, without trying to fix anyone’s grief.
• Remind each other that anticipatory grief is normal when we deeply love an aging, ill, or declining pet.
• Honor each person’s bond with their pet, recognizing that these relationships can be as deep as family.
• Make room for all feelings — sadness, fear, guilt, anger, tenderness, gratitude, exhaustion, and love.
• Support people through hard decisions with kindness, without telling them what they should do.
• Encourage members to work closely with their veterinarian when questions come up about comfort, treatment, quality of life, or end-of-life care.
• Share memories, stories, photos, and small rituals that help honor the pet’s life and the love shared.
• Practice simple grounding together, such as breathing, quiet reflection, or placing a hand over the heart.
• Help each other stay connected to the present moment, asking, “How can I love and care for my pet today?”
• Encourage gentle self-care, especially for those feeling overwhelmed by caregiving, worry, or sadness.
• Remind one another that no one has to go through this alone.
