Copper Canyon - 4 mile hike
Details
This is one of the annual Highland Center "Hiking Spree" hikes for 2025.
Personally, I have never done this hike, but the directions and trail description seem pretty straightforward, so we will have a bit of an adventure together! I've chosen a date when the weather in the area is expected to be cooler - low 70's. Nevertheless, it looks like there is very little shade on this hike, so be prepared with plenty of water, sunscreen, and appropriate clothing.
Description: This is easy loop hike of 4 miles. It climbs 300 feet (from 3250’ to 3550’) to to the rim of Copper canyon, and follows the rim before descending into the canyon. It features a intermittent waterfall at the far end of the loop. The radio towers you see to the south are atop Porcupine Mountain, overlooking Camp Verde. You will find Thorn trees, Mesquite, Juniper and Pinyon Pines intermixed.
Driving directions: Distance from Prescott to TH is 41 miles. Drive east from Prescott towards Camp Verde on SR 69, SR 169, and I-17N. Take exit 285 (General Crook Trail) to SR 260 E. In 0.3 mi turn right on Oasis Rd. In 0.4 mi turn right on FS 136 (dirt). The TH is in 1 mile, on the right. Trail #504 begins on the west side of the parking lot. (NOTE - the last mile of driving is on a dirt road.)
NOTE: I will not be coordinating carpools. If you wish to carpool with others on this Meetup group, post a comment here and make your own arrangements with other Meetup members.
If you complete, or attempt, 8 of the 10 Hiking Spree hikes listed by the Highland center you will be eligible to enter the raffle for a gift cad from the Hike Shack in downtown Prescott.
