Long before the bow and arrow, people found a way to throw a spear farther, faster and with more force than the human arm could manage alone.
The atlatl is one of humanity’s earliest force multipliers. It is a simple throwing lever, often no more than a carved stick with a hook or spur at one end, but it transformed hunting across much of the ancient world.
The tool extends the throwing arm, increasing leverage and accelerating a long, flexible dart toward its target. It is simple in appearance, but it teaches a great deal about physics, balance, coordination, material selection and the relationship between technology and the human body.
We’ll talk about how the atlatl works, why the darts are longer and more flexible than ordinary spears, and how leverage, timing and stored energy combine to create speed and force.
We’ll also look at the materials available to early makers, including wood, bone, antler, stone, sinew and plant fiber. We’ll discuss how atlatls differed across cultures and environments, and why this deceptively simple technology remained effective for thousands of years.
The main hands-on focus will be learning the throwing motion and safely practicing with atlatls and lightweight target darts. Depending on materials and time, we may also shape simple throwing boards and examine how dart length, flexibility, balance and weight affect performance.
