Get out of auto mode: Shooting Princeton University's grounds

Details

It's time to get your camera out of auto mode!

We'll be walking the grounds of Princeton University, with its gorgeous architecture and serene backdrops.

As we approach the first few buildings, host Louis C. Hochman ( http://LCHPhoto.com ) will start with a basic lesson on photo exposure — explaining ISO, shutter speed and aperture. Don't worry if you've never been out of auto before! We'll take it one step at a time.

Then, we'll move on to a casual stroll through the campus, hitting a few key spots along the way (suggestions for favorite spots welcome in the comments). Lou will help guide beginners and answer questions (and any intermediate/experienced photographers who join are invited to do the same).

Sunset is about 8 p.m., so with good weather, we should get some lovely skies and light. The light will change over our walk, so you'll put what you learned about exposure to good use.

Anyone interested is welcome to join for drinks and food in town after.

What to bring?

• Any camera with manual settings and lens(es) of your choice (I'm bringing one 20mm and one telephoto lens). Only have a kit lens? That's absolutely OK.

Anything else?

Any of the following are totally optional, but could be helpful. Lou's happy to help you make the most of them:

• Tripod (I may bring 1-2 extras -- Ask in the comments to claim them!)

• Shutter release

• Filters: Circular polarizing filter, standard ND filter, graduated ND filter
