The Secret of Information Hiding

Details

When you ask about writing a good code, a common first answer is a call to "encapsulate!" and "hide the internals." In the nearly 50 years since professor David Parnas first wrote about information hiding, it's gone from an academic impracticality to governing the style guides of intro programming courses.

But information hiding is much deeper than the common advice to "make methods private." In this workshop, we'll a little bit into the underlying theory of existential types. We'll discuss what it means for code to have a "secret" and how it enables parts to be changed independently, explore why information-hiding suggests focusing on data over code, and learn the One Weird Trick that can let you read a codebase three times faster.
