Humanism is more than just a 'lack of religious belief', it's a positive life stance. Human heartedness is a humanistic approach to living a better life through building a more cohesive, compassionate, values driven society.

In Human Hearted Living, we come together over afternoon tea to share and discuss a poem, song or reading related to humanist values or society building. This is followed by sharing our personal joys and concerns, offering support to each other and building caring relationships.

**Humanism and Cultural Diversity – A Short Overview**

**Historical Foundations**

**Classical and Renaissance Humanism**: Rooted in ancient Greek thought, humanism emphasized reason and ethics. During the Renaissance, it celebrated human potential and cultural exchange, though primarily from a European perspective.

**Enlightenment to Colonial Era**: Enlightenment thinkers championed universal rights and tolerance, while colonial encounters—despite paternalism—spurred early anthropological interest and helped preserve diverse cultural knowledge.

**Modern Humanism and Pluralism**

**Post-WWII Humanism**: Manifestos promoted human rights and cultural respect, emphasizing ethics free from dogma.

**Cultural Pluralism**: Civil rights and decolonization movements broadened humanism to include cultural self-determination and systemic equity, culminating in global frameworks like UNESCO’s cultural diversity declaration.

**Contemporary Applications**

**Education**: Humanist teaching integrates diverse voices and fosters inclusive classrooms.

**Workplaces**: Diversity training and ethical leadership value empathy, fairness, and collaboration.

**Community and Policy**: Intercultural programs and culturally sensitive services promote mutual understanding and equitable access.

**Arts and Media**: Storytelling and collaborative projects bring different cultural perspectives to wider audiences.

**Global Advocacy**: Humanist organizations support cultural rights while opposing traditions that violate human dignity.

**Australian Policy Context**
Following Labor’s 1983 victory, the 1986 ROMAMPAS report shaped multicultural policy around four equity principles: equal participation, resource access, policy influence, and cultural rights. This led to the creation of the Office of Multicultural Affairs (1987) and a National Agenda prioritizing cultural respect, social justice, and the economic value of diversity.

Modern humanism embraces cultural diversity as a strength. By promoting reason, empathy, and justice, it supports inclusive societies where all cultures are respected and individuals can thrive.

Or perhaps you just want a cup of coffee with new people in a relaxing atmosphere.

Come gather with Human Hearted Sydney in Burwood to connect and converse with like-minded people over a cup of coffee. We'll be in the cafe for around two hours or so, or longer depending on how people feel. We usually grab lunch in the cafe or afterwards go to any of the restaurants in Burwood if people are feeling hungry.

**Time, place and date:**
The venue is Nelsons Cafe in Burwood. It's next door to Coro88, near Burwood Park, and is a short walk from Burwood station. We're usually there from 11:30am for around two to three hours every third Sunday of the month.

**Connecting to our values:**
This event is part of living out Human Hearted Sydney's values of positive social connection and building community in Sydney. So lets meet and connect with those we already know, and those we haven't met before. All are welcome to socialise, meet new people, and build friendships.
