Saturday morning is a good time to do laundry.

It's common knowledge that much of data analytical work comes in the form of cleaning data; that is to say, acquiring and molding data into a conventional format ready to be used by data analytical tools.

In these sessions, we'll take messy data and wrangle them into cleaner formats. We focus on the cleaning portion because a) the finished product is fairly objective and b) everyone needs to do it and can learn from other's styles.

We'll provide a way for participants to obtain the data on their end, and attempt to clean the data alongside the presenter. We'll discuss the tools and methods we use to generate the finished product. Any code will be published to our github repository for this activity.

**A data science hackathon using a real world data set. Learn new skills, network, and "hack" your way through the data for fun and prizes.**

The Southern California R Users Group ([SoCalRUG](https://www.meetup.com/SOCAL-RUG/)) data science hackathon. During this event, we will be exploring an interesting data set, starting from the raw data all the way through to a final "end product" (e.g. a data visualization, an interesting data insight, a predictive model, etc.).
This event is open to all experience levels, from the complete beginner to the highly experienced. Participants will work in teams to "hack" through the data and will present their work at the end of the event for prizes. You are free to create your own team, or we will assist in team creation if you do not have one. This is a great way to network, share, and learn from others.
The main goal of the hackathon is to promote team work and foster education and learning in a welcoming environment. Though teams will competing to present their best work at the end of the event for prizes, communication and providing assistance across teams is highly encouraged. We will provide in-person training during the hackathon.
Participants will need to bring their own computers during the event.
