🇦🇴 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐊𝐢𝐳𝐨𝐦𝐛𝐚?
Kizomba evolved from Semba, a traditional form of dance and music that has its roots in Angola. After gaining independence from Portugal, Angola was plunged into a civil war in 1975, which lasted until 2002. During this tumultuous period, the release of new Semba music dwindled, leading Angolans to seek musical inspiration elsewhere such as the Caribbean and Cape Verde

As Kizomba music became more popular, Angolans began to merge the music with Semba steps, adapting to the slower rhythms of these new musical styles. This fusion gave birth to Kizomba dancing. Today, you may find people dancing to other musical genres such as Cola-Zouk and Cabo-Love from Cape Verde.

Brazilian Zouk evolved from the partner dance known as Lambada. As the Lambada music genre went out of fashion, Lambada dancers turned to Caribbean Zouk as their music of choice. It was this transition that birthed the dance known as "Brazilian Zouk" to distinguish the dance style from the musical genre "Caribbean Zouk".

Influenced by Iberian, African, and Indigenous cultures. Bachata is a traditional genre of music & dance originating from the Dominican Republic, developed during a time of government and media censorship. Bachata was first disparaged due to classism but is now a nostalgic keepsake for many Latin cultures. As Dominican people migrated outside the Dominican Republic, the opportunity for Bachata’s commercialization would take the genre to new heights.
