As AI development and deployment move increasingly into the cloud, questions of ethical responsibility become more complex. Cloud infrastructure has blurred the traditional boundaries between developer, provider, and user — making it harder to determine who holds moral and professional responsibility when AI systems produce unintended or problematic outcomes.

In this talk,Dr. Blay Whitby explore how long-established codes of professional ethics for computing (such as those of the BCS, ACM, and IEEE) apply in today’s cloud environment. The discussion might cover the moral implications of “AI as a service,” the shared responsibilities between cloud engineers and platform providers, and the importance of professional judgement when working with opaque, large-scale systems.

By bridging AI ethics and cloud practice, it would invite attendees to consider how technical expertise and ethical reflection must evolve together in a distributed, cloud-driven world.

Winter is almost upon us which means it’s time to cue up the final PHP Sussex session of 2025!

In ‘Escaping the Code Maze’, back end consultant and PHP Sussex Host [Yannick Chenot](https://www.linkedin.com/in/yannickchenot/) encourages us to be more liberal with our privates as he guides us through the benefits of being ‘closed by default’ in the context of Bertrand Meyer’s famous SOLID programming tenets.

**Escaping the Code Maze**

Exploring a code base is like navigating a maze with a partial map. While some paths are correctly indicated, some are mislabelled or turn out to be dead ends. Take a childless class not marked as final, for instance – the keyword’s absence is like a sign pointing to a dark tunnel leading nowhere.

How many such paths do we accidentally – or deliberately – leave open? This presentation introduces the Closed-by-Default Principle, a reframing of existing principles focussed on keeping those paths shut, relieving the developer’s cognitive load in the process.

It is also an exploration of PHP’s evolution over time, each version introducing features to keep the maze as navigable as possible. We’ll also see how to leverage static analysis tools to automate the corresponding rules, giving developers the assurance that all paths lead somewhere.

The November migration of the world's top web developers to the sunny city of Brighton & Hove can only mean one thing - [ffconf 2025](https://2025.ffconf.org/) is coming. So, it's time for another International Async Show n' tell! This year's installment will be *on Thursday 13th November* (the second Thursday in November).

If you're interested in giving a talk, we'd love to hear from you. It's the perfect opportunity to give a peek at your passion project, try out a lightning talk, or just share what's on your mind. You’ll have five minutes on the night to tell us about something… a project, a library, a technique, a story, or anything else about JavaScript, related tech (HTML, CSS, SVG, etc), or the wider world of web.

If you would like to grab a speaking slot, please leave a comment including:

* Your main website, if you have one
* Where to find you on the socials
* A sentence or two about your talk
* Any relevant links
* Delete as appropriate:
* I have a live demo that I will need to run on my own machine
* I can provide slides/pre-recorded demos that are publicly accessible on the web

Ideally your talk should be available as slides on the web that can be accessed from another machine. If you have live demos it would be easiest for us (to avoid having to switch machines regularly and get the stream setup on each) if you pre-recorded these.
