Climbing the Matterhorn

Details

We did this ride in May but only a few people came and those who came liked it, so we are repeating it.

This ride goes out to ranch country on a little known road called Matterhorn which goes North from Lemon Valley. This is an out and back of 7.5 miles one way, but the road is interesting and the surface is in good shape. To get there we take a usual route using a bit of Lemon drive but avoiding the more sketchy sections of Lemmon Drive using Military Rd and Bravo Ave both of which have bike lanes. A look at the profile will give you a hint on where the name comes from.

We start at Panther Valley Park, which seems to be mainly a skate park. We can park along Western Street. This avoids a 2 miles section of North Virginia which recent riding has shown to have a lot of gravel in the bike lane.

We start with a short exploration of a residential ride on and then continue up Opal station to Golden Valley Blvd. We do another residential diversion to get off Golden Valley and it deposits us on Souverain which connects us to Lemmon Drive. We take Military Road and Bravo Ave out to Lemmon Valley and take a side road Tupelo street to Matterhorn. We take Matterhorn over the hill until it ends and continue on Antelope Valley till the end of pavement. We can turn around and return but this time we turn off Matterhorn onto Oregon. We return to near the airport on Bravo and find our way to Moya Blvd and take this. At this point we can continue to the Shell Station or take a short cut to Silver Lake which cuts a bit of distance. We take Silver Lake to Sky Vista and Rutherford. We turn down Beckworth which with name changes brings us back to Opal Station and Newport and we take the short section on Link Lane back to the start.
