Product Management: Myth or Fact

In this talk and discussion I’ll describe the essentials of product thinking, management, and process. Then we’ll discuss why most organizations neglect it. With any luck, you’ll leave with some common language, understanding, and some tough questions of your own to ask.

Every organization has products, although they’re not always software. But even if they’re not, software products are a critical part to delivering their products or services, and operating their business. For 30+ years I’ve been using product thinking. For the past 15+ years I’ve been helping companies adopt a product operating model for software development. Because today, that model is clearer than ever. Despite that, most companies don’t quite understand it. Even if they do, they strongly resist following it. This hurts their customers, their employees, and ultimately their own business.

This talk and discussion offers no solution. Rather, I want you to understand the problem and help me, and all of us, understand why it’s a problem. If you understand one thing about being product-centric, you know it’s about understanding and solving problems. So, let’s work together to solve this one.
