Panel discussion: Pitch Perfectly

Details

Every Pulitzer, Peabody or Emmy started with a pitch.

The art of selling a story to a dubious editor is the lifeblood of a freelancer, but is also critical for staff reporters who want to get the prime front-page/cover/top of the broadcast treatment they ALL know their ideas deserve.

This panel will explore winning approaches for pitching your story idea, how to navigate the editing process without losing your voice (or your self-respect), and how to turn a one time gig into a career-defining relationship. Participants:

• Timothy Harper. Tim's magazine credits include: Atlantic Monthly, Reader's Digest, TIME, Inc, Forbes, Sky, NY Times, Washington Post,Chicago Tribune, and many more. Tim has just started a new publishing venture at the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism, serving as editor of the new academic imprint, the CUNY Journalism Press. He is a visiting professor at the CUNY J-School, teaching the 6-hour core course The Craft of Journalism, serving as the school's writing coach and overseeing a popular workshop on longform nonfiction narrative.

• Jennifer Keishin Armstrong writes for several publications, including The New York Times Book Review, Fast Company, Vulture, The Verge, Dame, BBC Culture, and others. Her next book, Seinfeldia: The Secret World of the Show About Nothing that Changed Everything, will be published next year by Simon & Schuster. She lives in Manhattan and teaches for Gotham Writers Workshop.
