Talk 1: A History of APL in Toronto

Abstract: Toronto was the beating heart of APL innovation in the world – the centre from which APL and other array languages circulated around the world. Lib will walk you down memory lane to meet key players in the birth and popularization of APL and the crucial role played by I.P. Sharp from its Toronto headquarters. Join her in hearing new stories and revisiting some old ones.
Speaker: Lib Gibson, Retired / Former CEO / Advisor to CEOs / IPSA Alum & More ⬇
Bio: After a Masters in Math, Lib found her way to I.P. Sharp Associates, where she worked for almost 20 years. She started in Ottawa and opened IPSA’s Western Canada branches and the subsidiary in Belgium before coming to Toronto, where she ultimately ran the Software Business Unit. After Reuters’ acquisition of IPSA, Lib was CEO of a (short-lived) mobile-data applications development start-up in the late 80s. In the 90s, she led teams that launched the Sympatico Internet service and the Globe and Mail web applications. In the aughts, she was the CEO of Bell Globemedia Interactive, Canada’s largest Internet media company. Subsequently she was a strategic advisor to the CEO of BCE and sat on several corporate boards before her retirement in 2021.
