Join us for guest speaker talk followed by restaurant lunch. First gather at the Hollywood office of organizer Charles Baron (address/directions below) for the talk, then eat at Brio Tuscan Grill in Hallandale Beach (Gulfstream complex) (address/directions below).
Our speaker, Dr. Barry Dancis, is a Secular Jewish scholar who lives in the DC area. He meets with us once a year and always gives a great, thought-provoking talk.

TOPIC: Mameloshn and the Joys of Kvetching; a presentation based on the book Born to Kvetch: Yiddish Language and Culture In All of Its Moods by Michael Wex, a Canadian novelist, playwright, translator, lecturer, performer, and author of books on language and literature.
We will examine the roots of Yiddish, its expressive use in curses, courtship, sex, etc., attempts to use Yiddish as a replacement for religion, and a brief look at its modern revival.

SPEAKER'S BACKGROUND: Barry is a retired bioinformatics consultant and former chair of the Education Committee of the Jewish Children Folkshul of Philadelphia. He has been a board member of the Congress of Secular Jewish Organizations (CSJO) and the Society of Humanistic Judaism (SHJ), two umbrella organizations serving secular Jewish groups primarily in North America.

Barry was the primary developer, distributor and spokesperson for the Folkshul curriculum sharing it with other secular Jewish Sunday schools and making site visits to promote its use. He has also developed a web-based curriculum for long-distance learning that he used to teach two students wishing to complete the Folkshul Jewish study requirements for their Secular bar/bat mitzvahs. He frequently gives talks on topics of Jewish history and secular Jewish philosophy.

This is half mile east of 95 on Hollywood Blvd., on the east side of City Hall Circle. It is 5-story bldg. is on the corner of where the circle turns back to the straight-a-way heading east, on the south side of the street.
