Welcome to the first installment of Creative Literacy, a seven-part lecture series dedicated to reclaiming the classical Liberal Arts as a modern toolkit for the creative mind. Over the course of seven sessions, we will journey through the Trivium, the arts of language: Grammar, Logic, and Rhetoric; and the Quadrivium, the arts of number: Arithmetic, Geometry, Music, and Astronomy, exploring how these ancient disciplines provide the ultimate framework for original thought and creative mastery.
This opening one-hour lecture focuses on the first step of the Trivium: Grammar. Far from being a dry set of rules for punctuation, classical Grammar is the art of perceiving and naming reality. It is the foundational stage of the creative process, the gathering of raw material and the precise observation of the world around us. Before we can reason (Logic) or persuade (Rhetoric), we must first learn to see with clarity and name with intent.
In this session, we'll explore:
- The 7-part roadmap: an overview of the Trivium and Quadrivium and why they matter for the creative mind
- Grammar as perception: how the way we structure language shapes the boundaries of what we can imagine
- The creative input: why Grammar is the essential first stage of any project, from writing a novel to designing a brand
- Building your lexicon: practical ways to use grammatical thinking to sharpen your creative focus
This series is designed for writers, artists, designers, and thinkers who want to move beyond inspiration and toward a disciplined, structured approach to creativity. No prior knowledge of classical education required, just a willingness to look at creativity from a new angle.
