Details

We have two speakers!!!

We would like to invite you to 'Scientific Computing' (PuPPy SIG) meetup. Our format is to meet informally and discuss how we use Python for scientific computing (not strictly). Galvanize is hosting us this time. Thanks, Galvanize!

Speakers:
Allison Pfeiffer will talk on the topic, "Harnessing USGS online databases to understand continent scale trends in gravel rivers".
About the speaker: Allison is a postdoc in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering, University of Washington.

Brad Chamberlain will talk on the topic, "Chapel: Programmability, Parallelism, and Performance".
About the talk: Chapel is a programming language whose goal is to support productive, general-purpose parallel computing at scale. The Chapel project can be thought of as striving to create a language in which writing and reading code is as enjoyable as Python while resulting in scalable performance that competes with Fortran, C, OpenMP, and MPI (the de facto programming models for large-scale scientific computing).
Chapel is portable, running on laptops, clusters, the cloud, and
supercomputers. It is also open-source, being developed at GitHub under the Apache 2.0 license.
About the speaker: Brad Chamberlain is a Principal Engineer at Cray Inc. where he works on parallel programming models, focusing primarily on leading the design and implementation of the Chapel language. Brad is also associated with the University of Washington as an affiliate professor.

cheers,
Sai Nudurupati,
Kurt Maurer,
Amanda Manaster
