It's been a few years since we have gathered together for the Climate March (Klimaatmars). In just those few years, whilst we weathered the fifth biggest pandemic in recorded human history, an even bigger extinction event has advanced in ways we are now feeling as our daily reality, as an increase in natural disasters globally such as floods and fires, as a fundamental alteration to local ecologies and cultures, and as a future it is almost too late to prevent.
As a Psychedelic Society, we are not just interested in contemporary trends in novel drug research and treatments. We are also a group of human beings who care deeply about a complex fabric of issues that are all interconnected: the way our Western interest in psychedelics and "healing tourism" affects local communities and ecologies in the global south; the way the increasingly crushing housing crisis, cost of living crisis, impossible standards of existing, and deep inequalities in our society are engineered by the same individuals, corporations, and governments that fuel the destruction of land, the colonisation and war in search of fossil fuels, and consumerism that justifies the production of waste that is out of control; the way these issues impact our mental and physical health, driving us into toxic cycles of trying to heal and "be better" so we can overcome the systemic barriers that prevent us from having a liveable, healthy life and environment; and all the ways the distractions of illness, poverty, struggle, and compassion fatigue disarm us, disconnect us, and leaving us feeling powerless to challenge the very mechanics at the root of it all.
BUT, there is not only still hope but there are many people like us and like you who want real change. We live in a time of communication, of innovation, of mobilisation, and of revolution in entire populations pushed to the brink, fed up, and driven to act together. The call to halt the climate crisis comes from every walk of life, from young people who want an earth to grow up on, to countless scientists bearing stark warnings, to professional and political calls to save infrastructure, to environmentalist calls to renew destroyed ecologies to restore life and balance, to emergency services on the front lines of natural disasters claiming lives and land, to every individual and community who feel like they simply wish they knew how to do more. There are already so many initiatives to clean up oceans of trash, renew forested areas, process waste without emissions, generate power from renewable sources, change consumer behaviour by changing what is available to consume, and the countless other endeavours to mitigate the impact of human activity.
Successful activism requires two key components: democracy and immovability. Our voices need to be many and our resistance needs to be as unshakable as the forces who oppose system change. Our aim is to give our community an accessible way to be some of those voices and safely show our resistance. Given that our community is so international, not everyone will have groups that they belong to that they feel they can participate with.
✨Everyone is welcome and supported with us regardless of nationality, race, gender, sexuality, disability, creed, or class. If you have specific requirements on the day, just let us know!✨
📣Join, share, act.📣
