Public Speaking Practice for People with Anxiety "Himon Speech"
Details
Himon Speech is a public speaking practice format that originated in Japan, a country where many people experience strong anxiety about speaking in front of others. The program became popular in Tokyo as a safe, pressure-free way for people with speaking anxiety to build confidence through experience rather than instruction.
This is not a lecture-based class. There is no instructor standing at the front giving long explanations. Instead, participants do most of the talking, and the majority of the session is spent on actual speaking practice.
To avoid too much tension, we limit classes to small groups of 5 to 8 people.
### What makes Himon Speech different
1. High number of speaking opportunities
Unlike typical public speaking or anxiety seminars, this format focuses on speaking and experiencing small successes.
In a single session, you can experience this success multiple times in one day, which helps reduce fear more effectively than listening alone.
2. Opinion-sharing time
You will have time to talk and exchange thoughts with others who share similar fears.
Many participants find that simply realizing they are not alone makes their anxiety feel lighter.
3. Supportive feedback from a speaking facilitator
A speaking facilitator will offer gentle guidance and reassurance, including confirming when you are already speaking clearly and effectively.
People with speaking anxiety often underestimate their own ability, and hearing objective confirmation can be a powerful confidence boost.
4. Written feedback from all participants
After you speak, you will receive short written impressions from other participants about your speech.
Opportunities to learn how others actually perceive your speaking are rare—and in most cases, the feedback is more positive than people expect.
5. Video review after the session
A video recording of the practice session will be shared within about one week.
Watching yourself speak can be surprisingly reassuring. Instead of relying on “I’m bad at speaking” assumptions, you can see the reality for yourself.
### Speaking structure
In each session, every participant has six chances to speak:
- Two prepared speeches (2 minutes each)
- Four short impromptu speeches
You may speak at your own pace, and listening or observing is also welcome. There is no pressure to perform perfectly, and feedback is always respectful and optional.
After being held in over 300 sessions in Tokyo, Himon Speech began hosting sessions in Los Angeles in the winter of 2025. The sessions are facilitated locally in LA, while staying true to the original Japanese format that emphasizes safety, respect, and practice over instruction.
This event is designed for people who:
- Feel nervous or anxious when speaking in front of others
- Want to practice speaking many times, not listen to lectures
- Prefer a calm, supportive atmosphere
This event is not suitable for:
- Professional speakers or coaches
- Those looking for advanced presentation training
- Anyone seeking harsh criticism or performance pressure
If you are looking for a quiet, respectful space where you can speak multiple times, receive reassurance, and confirm your progress objectively, you are welcome to join.
