How does it work?
This will be a two-hour workshop that will begin with a 5-7 minute presentation on the topic of the day, followed by improvised speaking practice. We'll do a short warm-up where each participant will be asked to introduce themselves in 30 seconds, then participants will take turns delivering short 1-2 minute improvised speeches on a variety of fun and easy-going topics. After each speech, the facilitator will briefly give some helpful, kind, and constructive feedback to help participants improve, and learn about the art of public speaking. Will we be told in advance what topics we will speak on?
No. You will be asked to give fully-improvised speeches on-the-spot. This is by design to practice your fluency, creativity, and quick-thinking skills. The topics or questions will be simple and easy ones that anyone can speak on. Our goal is to exercise your improvised speaking skills, not to stump you or pose intellectually challenging questions. What kinds of topics will we be asked to speak on?
Speech topics will be simple and easy to answer. They might be questions about your life experience like "Tell us about a time when you learned from a mistake", or "What fun thing happened to you this week?". They might be questions about your preferences or opinions like "What popular thing is overrated?" or "What's the best music to play at a party?". They might be funny questions like "Would you rather be on a dating show or a survival show?" or "Why do cats have nine lives?".Who will facilitate these workshops?
They will be hosted by various people who all have experience and knowledge about public speaking, and improvised speaking. We ensure that all of our facilitators are skilled in explaining the workshop concepts, organizing the event, and creating a safe and fun atmosphere for everyone to get out of their comfort zone and practice public speaking. What Skill Level Do I Need to Have?
This is a general event, open to people of all skill levels and English proficiency levels. Everyone is welcome to join, practice, and learn.Admission $5
The fee for the workshop is $5. It's free for guests of the hostel and members of Speak With Style Toastmasters. You can pay at the door by cash, or by Interac transfer to speakwithstyle@gmail.com.Hosted by Speak With Style Toastmasters
