Partnering with Indie Bookstores

Details

Yes, it's difficult to get independently published books into bookstores. But, says our speaker Pamela Sheppard, you can do it if you know the magic behind the closed doors of the buyer’s office, and what to do once you are facing that buyer. You have to understand the buyers' challenges. You’ll need a pitch, the COMPS, and a promotion plan you can express in three minutes or less. The opportunities in your own community can establish you as a serious, knowledgeable partner for the store. You are the engine for the sales of your books – and that's what independent bookstores are looking for. They will welcome you.

Pam has spent more than twenty-five years in sales and marketing with Big 5 publishers (Simon & Schuster, Random House, and Crown Publishers). She has discussed plot with the best editors in the business, helped create proprietary book products, planned and delivered publicity programs, and sold to the best, savvy book buyers across ten states. She spent nine more years selling for more than forty mid-size and small publishers as a commissioned representative, which overlapped with sixteen years editing, consulting, and teaching new and experienced writers of both independent and traditional publishing projects.

Admission is $20 for nonmembers and $10 for members of PWOC/PWSD. RSVP (and optionally prepay through PayPal) at http://publisherswritersorangecounty.org/rsvp/ or pay at the door with exact-change cash, or a check payable to PWSD. (SORRY, NO CREDIT CARDS.)

TIP: Bring your walking shoes! After the meeting, join us for a walk to a nearby restaurant for lunch, camaraderie, and more networking in quaint Old Towne Orange.
