Harishchandragad is one of the most popular trekking destinations in Maharashtra. It is a huge plateau with ancient temples, caves, and a huge Shivalinga at the top. It is also famous for an overhanging cliff, 2000 ft deep, known as Konkankada, and looking down from here is an overwhelming feeling for everyone alike.
Since the plateau is really vast, there are various routes to reach the top. Easier routes are used in monsoons and by beginners all year round, while the tougher routes are safe to tread from winters till the onset of summers.
Amongst the tough routes, Nalichi Vaat is the most popular trek route, but there are other offbeat routes as well which are not as popular as Nalichi Vaat since there are much tougher, enduring and at some patches, risky.
We took the challenge of trekking through one such route known as Makadnal, which is a narrow gully filled with boulders, scree, and climbing patches. But crossing this gully doesn't mean that the trek is done. After climbing this one has to walk for some distance at the edge of the plateau after which one reaches the foot of an old route to the top known as Junnar Darwaza. Even Junnar Darwaza has broken rock steps and is very steep. It takes a fit person to trek non-stop from morning till evening, along with the safety of climbing equipment and an expert climber to lead, to reach the top of Harishchandragad via this route.
We descended via Sadhale Ghat which is another lesser-used route and has some trail common with the Nalichi Vaat route.

Trek through this route will be organized again in Jan-Feb 2021. For the interested participants, we have managed to shoot some videos from our last treks, conducted before the pandemic spread. Presenting the 1st video which is like a teaser for this grand trek.
