Talk:
Unlocking Observability in Apache Kafka-Based Systems with OpenTelemetry

Abstract:
Distributed tracing is essential for tracking requests across micro-services. But when it comes to Kafka’s decoupled producers, consumers, and asynchronous processes, tracing a transaction from start to finish isn’t always straightforward. In this talk, we will go th rough how to monitor Kafka-based applications using distributed tracing with OpenTelemetry. By leveraging tools like Jaeger and New Relic, we’ll uncover how to gain a full view of your micro-services, even in the face of Apache Kafka’s asynchronous nature. we’ll also walk through both automatic and manual instrumentation to capture rich telemetry.

Talk:
Kafka Internals: How It Works Under the Hood

Abstract:
Key Takeaways

  1. Kafka’s Core Architecture
    • How Kafka organizes data into topics, partitions, and segments.
    • The role of brokers, producers, and consumers in message flow.
  2. How Kafka Ensures Durability and Fault Tolerance
    • Log-based storage and replication strategies.
    • Leader and follower partitions, ISR (In-Sync Replicas).
  3. Deep Dive into Kafka’s Write and Read Path
    • How producers send data, partitioning strategies, and message ordering.
    • How consumers fetch data, consumer groups, and rebalancing mechanisms.
  4. Kafka’s Performance Optimization Techniques
    • Zero-copy transfer (page cache & sendfile).
    • Log segment retention, compaction, and cleanup strategies.
  5. How Kafka Handles Failures and Leader Elections
    • Controller role and Zookeeper (or KRaft) for leader election.
    • Broker failures, leader re-election, and partition reassignment.
