3rd Meetup: Featuring PixieDust and Brain Research

Details

We are delighted to announce that we at PyData Cardiff will be hosting our third meetup on Wednesday the 8th of August, kindly sponsored by AMPLYFI www.amplyfigroup.com and Tramshed Tech http://www.tramshedtech.co.uk/

The venue will open at 18:30 when drinks will be provided. The talks will then begin at 19:00 with a break in between for refreshments. After the event, we will be heading to a pub that is en route to Cardiff Central Station.

The two talks in this session will look at data visualisation, and on the experience of using Python in brain imaging research.

We can also hold a Lightning Talk session ⚑ if anyone would like to give a short presentation. This is a fantastic opportunity for anyone who is new to presenting, and would like to talk at a welcoming environment. Please let us know if you are interested by filling out this short form: https://goo.gl/forms/uIu5hiCHkgnkTouA2

Talk 1: Navigating the Magical Data Visualisation Forest ✨🌲🌲✨
Margriet Groenendijk IBM Bristol

Data visualization is fun but can take up a lot of time, especially when you are exploring new data. The magic forest is much easier to navigate with PixieDust (https://pixiedust.github.io/pixiedust/) a free open-source Python library that makes it quick and simple to explore data with any visualization library without writing code in a Jupyter notebook. Learn how PixieDust takes out some of the coding, how to contribute, and how to make and share visualizations in seconds.

Talk 2: Python in brain research 🐍 🧠 πŸ”¬

Computational neuroscience for many years was dominated by expensive and closed software. Recently, due to the rise of the Open Science movement, that trend changes. More and more neuroscientific analyses can be done in Python, using tools like nipy, nibabel, mne. In this talk, we will present a sneak peek of these tools based on our own research done at the Cardiff University Brain Research Imaging Centre (CUBRIC).

As before, we are very grateful to our sponsors Tramshed Tech and Amplyfi, who are providing us with the venue together with food and refreshments. And of course, we are offering free beer, soft drinks and pizza 🍻πŸ₯€πŸ•

We hope that as many of you can make it to what will be another very enjoyable session, with material for a variety of different ranges of Python and programming skills!

As always, the evening will be covered by the official PyData Code of Conduct: https://pydata.org/code-of-conduct.html
