Talks:
Big Data in Medicine: The Mysterious Links Between Blood Sugar and Arm Problems
People with diabetes commonly encounter painful problems of the arm, wrist and hand, but no-one really knows why. Is this because of their higher blood sugar? Or is it because of other things liked with diabetes? It's easy to find a connection between two things, but hard to find if one thing directly causes another. In this talk, we turn to big data and genetics to explain this strange link between diabetes and upper limb problems.
Sewer Inspection with Computer Vision
Water companies must regularly survey their sewers to prioritise maintenance to ensure the effective operation of the wastewater network. As the majority of the network is too small for human entry, analysis is performed using CCTV cameras, recording footage of a pipe’s interior. This presentation explores the data-centric methods used to automate this analysis, highlighting the available data, applied computer vision techniques, and key results.
The Grand Challenge of Emotion-Based Music Recommendation: How well can you predict someone's emotional response to music with AI?
Releasing in 2006, Spotify began ushering in an age of abundant music. In 2014, The Echo Nest was acquired by Spotify, completing this transition. Today, there are literally 1000s of algorithmic playlists you can listen to, catering to all kinds of genres, styles, and moods. Yet for some of us, these playlists seem to critically miss the "emotional" mark, despite how smartly designed these systems are. For the last 5 years on and off, it's been my passion to research what was missing, devise my own solutions, and find what could work. In this talk, I present the state-of-the-art in today's music recommendation services, and the emerging grand challenge of music recommender interfaces that could change how we listen to music forever, focusing specifically on emotion-based music recommendation, and explaining what the "semantic gap" is.
