Tutorials on Leveraging Federated Learning to Build More Robust AI Models for Biomedicine using APPFL
Abstract: Federated learning (FL) is a distributed machine learning paradigm enabling collaborative model training while preserving data privacy. In today's landscape, where most data is proprietary, confidential, and distributed, FL has become a promising approach to leverage such data effectively, particularly in sensitive domains such as biomedicine. In this talk, we will provide a comprehensive introduction to FL, covering its motivation, core concepts, applications, and associated challenges. The talk will also feature a tutorial using Amazon SageMaker and the Advanced Privacy-Preserving Federated Learning Framework (APPFL), demonstrating how to train more robust biomedical AI models by leveraging data from multiple sources, as opposed to a single dataset.
Audience Takeaway: The audience will gain a solid understanding of federated learning and its value in enabling and simplifying the training of more capable machine learning models in domains where data privacy is paramount. The audience will also have the opportunity to gain experience to leverage the APPFL framework to simulate and deploy federated learning on real-world datasets.
