PyHou Tutorial - Biopython

Details

This is part of a tutorial series given by Walker Hale at the Texas Medical Center on the Python programming language. If you have a laptop, please bring it, but this is not a requirement.

Newcomers are welcome. It is not necessary to have attended previous sessions, so jump in!

This intermediate tutorial session will cover the basics of installing and using Biopython, http://biopython.org/wiki/Main_Page

Biopython "is a set of freely available tools for biological computation". It is primarily of interest to people in the Medical Center, the biotech industry, and the bio-fuels sector of the energy industry.

After this session, you should know just enough for you to be dangerous and learn the rest on your own.

We will be following this format:

Form teams of 2-3 Make sure everyone has Python installed Get Biopython installed Type-along demonstration of the basic use of Biopython Pointers to Biopython resources

Note: If you have a laptop, please bring it with a fully charged battery. (Electrical outlets may be limited.) Also if you are able, please have a version of Python 2 installed (http://www.python.org/download/), along with a text editor. If you are not comfortable installing Python on your own, we can help you.

Additionally, if you have the time please take a look at the instructions here: http://www.biopython.org/DIST/docs/install/Installation.html

There is no requirement to install Biopython prior to attending, but those of you who feel comfortable attempting it are invited to do so. If enough people manage to install Biopython prior to the tutorial, the effect will be speed up progress for everyone, since we can focus on fewer people needing to install.

Mac users: be aware that Biopython requires Xcode on Macs. Xcode is optional software that you can find on your system disks: http://www.mactricksandtips.com/2010/02/installing-xcode.html

Directions: Note that the map on the Meetup page may be wrong. Use this: http://www.sph.uth.tmc.edu/map.aspx Visitor parking is available directly in front of the building in a pay-per-hour lot. METRORail Texas Medical Center TC Stn.
