Description:
A serverless workflow can have excellent Python test coverage and still double-charge a customer, skip compensation, or fail after resuming from a callback. Traditional line coverage tells us which statements executed, but it does not tell us whether every important workflow path behaved correctly.

In this code-first session, we will build an order-processing saga using AWS Step Functions, Python Lambda functions, DynamoDB, and SQS. Using Floci, Testcontainers, and pytest, we will execute the complete workflow locally through its public interface without mocking each AWS client.

We will inject transient failures, permanent failures, duplicate requests, and delayed callbacks. We will collect branch coverage from inside the Lambda containers and combine it with a second metric: workflow-path coverage derived from Step Functions execution history. This exposes untested retries, catch handlers, timeouts, and compensation paths that ordinary code coverage cannot see.

We will then examine how the same testing principles apply to AWS Lambda durable functions, where checkpointing and replay introduce additional requirements around determinism and idempotency.

Attendees will leave with a reusable pytest architecture, practical failure-injection patterns, and a testing strategy that balances fast local feedback with a smaller validation suite running in AWS.
