MISINFORMATION, DEEP FAKES, AND AI, OH MY!
With the rise of generative artificial intelligence (generative AI) such as OpenAI ChatGPT, Google Bard, MidJourney, DALL-E, and others, and wide spread public access to these services, the dangers of misinformation, disinformation, deep fakes, and loss of privacy have also increased. With the stroke of a pen, or in this case typing on a keyboard, a person can easily create a news article, social media post, picture, or other media which could lead to things such as but not limited to market fluctuations, voter manipulation, or something as simple as an increase in effective phishing and vishing attempts.
The use of generative AI for these scenarios is no longer just fiction and presents a clear and present danger to society. For instance, AI-generated political disinformation has already gone viral online ahead of the 2024 election(2). Like-minded political operatives could use AI to create fake personas and election officials, fabricate videos of voting-machine manipulation and ballot-stuffing, and write false news stories (1).
Recent advances in artificial intelligence have made it easier than ever to create sophisticated and compelling fake videos — so called deepfakes —depicting individuals saying and doing things they never said or did (3). Such deep fakes can be used to sow the seeds of discord in society and create chaos in markets(4).
