From COBOL to Copilots: Why "No-Code" Never Kills the Coder
Every few years somebody swears the newest tool to magically avoid needing developers will boot developers out of a job. Yet here we are, still coding, still shipping. Come along for a quick tour from COBOL’s “English you can compile” to today’s LLM powered vibe coding agents and see why each wave of “code without coders” crashed on the same rocks. You’ll leave with a pocketful of history, a nose for hype, and concrete ways to pair AI helpers with your hard-won craft instead of handing the keys over.
Sam Bishop is a professional software developer and snake charmer a.k.a. Python problem solver. They are an amateur content creator and rocket scientist who likes working on their software and hardware projects, playing games, and 3D printing things.

Building Fully Automated Agents
Software isn’t being written by humans anymore—so why do our delivery models still assume that it is?

This talk distils a year of hands‑on experimentation building agentic engineering teams that generate Python systems. Aidan will share a practical AI‑first delivery model, show how deterministic tooling creates fast automated backpressure, and explain how we keep agents reliably producing correct, maintainable Python without re‑introducing human bottlenecks.
If you want to move past AI‑assisted coding and into truly agentic Python software delivery, this session is for you.
Aidan Morgan is a four‑time startup VP/CTO, founder, and seasoned technology executive with more than two decades of experience leading high‑impact engineering teams and scaling digital product organisations. He has driven innovation across startups, scale‑ups, and enterprise environments, with a career spanning embedded systems, cloud platforms, autonomous robotics, and large‑scale digital transformation.
Aidan currently serves as Chief Engineer at Bankwest, where he is helping guide the bank’s transition to a digital‑only future, driving modern engineering and Agentic Engineering practices across teams and platforms.

He also works as an Industry Fellow at AITAI, actively supporting research and industry engagement initiatives in advanced AI and engineering. His role includes mentoring founders and technology leaders in the adoption of emerging AI capabilities—reflected in ongoing collaborative AI discussions recognised by AITAI’s leadership.

A special thank you our food, drink and generous venue sponsor, Bankwest, for making our May meetup possible 🙌
