What we’re about
This book club focuses on books that have been banned-- for varied reasons and at different points in history. In addition to discussing the key elements of the book itself, we also consider questions like: What entity banned the book, and what were its stated reasons? What was the socio-political climate at the time, and how did that influence the situation? If it was banned a long time ago, do we think perspectives are different now?
We will select books across a range of contexts, genres, and intended audiences. Book lovers welcome! Please DM with any questions.
**Important guidelines:
1) Many of the books we read will involve controversial or potentially upsetting topics (after all, there's a reason someone thought they should be banned). Lively, civil debate is encouraged-- we won't always all agree and shouldn't expect to. However, attacking, belittling, or talking over other members is not acceptable.
2) On the website or Meetup app, members should feel free to post comments to ask questions, share information, give a heads-up on late arrival, etc. Rude, nasty, attacking, or otherwise inappropriate comments directed toward other members will NOT be tolerated and will lead to removal from the group.
