Foundation Navigation Course Day - 1 of 2


Details
This is day one of a two day course introducing map and compass and will give you a good grounding on map reading and navigation. We will cover Symbols; Contours features; Location; Direction and distance; Pacing; Timing; Naithsmith's Law and Grid references.
We will also cover re-location techniques using a map, and staying on route with map and terrain association practice exercises.
This should give you enough information to go and practice using the map and compass on on your own in fair conditions and thereby improve your skills.
Equipment required
Compass
Map OS 344 Pentland Hills (Optional)
Map Case or improvised map case (large zip lock food bag)
Pen and Paper for notes
We recommend you purchase the OS344 map so you can continue your map reading practice in the Pentlands. However we will supply maps for the day.
Personal protection equipment
You will require summer mountain equipment including warm layers and gloves. with boots giving good ankle support. Sun cream and a hat are recommended for warm sunny weather with midge repellent or midge net.
Remember and bring enough to drink for a long day in the hills with food or snacks for breaks.
