Foundation Map skills Navigation Course - Day 2 of 2

The foundation map skills course and compass basics is the second in a series of navigation courses which enable you to achieve competence to the highest level. The core skills techniques and strategies learned are fundamental for navigating at every level in all conditions.

Who's it for? Beginners who have already taken part in the foundation course day 1 or an equivalent or others wishing to develop or revise existing compass and map reading skills.

What's if for? It focuses on map skills required to navigate in the outdoors using man made and natural features in fair visibility using map interpretation with re-location using features, pacing and timing.

Where will it take place? We have selected Flotterston in the Pentland Hills in this instance and this area will provide maximum opportunity to practice the skills and techniques of the core map skills course.

Equipment required

We recommend you purchase a Quality Compass so you can become familiar with the one you intend to use on the hill. Silva expedition 4, or Suunto are good brands but usually cost more than £20 - £25 - Beware cheap imitations from Amazon.

Watch or stopwatch (waterproof) with second hand or digital timer (phone)

Paper/notepad and pencil.

Map OS 344 Pentland Hills (optional but recommended)

Map Case or improvised map case (large zip lock food bag) we recommend Ortlieb 27 x 27 it's pricy but guaranteed for 5 years

Pen and Paper for notes.

We will supply 1:50,000 OS maps and 1:25,000 maps of the area

We recommend you purchase the OS 344 so you can continue your map reading practice in the Pentlands but we will manage the course without it if you do not wish to make the investment. ( Bought O.S. maps are easier to read, crisper detail)

You require to bring summer mountain equipment for a day on the hills, with boots giving good ankle support. Sun cream and hat is recommended for warm sunny weather and midge repellent or net. It's always advisable to pack gloves and some warm layers and of course waterproofs.

Remember and bring enough water for a long day in the hills with food and snacks for breaks.
