QS Discussions #5

Details

This meetup we want to convene an ethics commission to do some technology assessment: We will discuss ethical questions concerning the Quantified Self. The discourse about ethics and the Quantified Self is highly centered around issues of privacy and self-optimisation. But in our opinion self-tracking is touching much more than that. We will try to widen the discourse and talk about certain aspects like the solidarity principle in health care, a new digital divide or a right of not-knowing.
To structure the discussion the media anthropologist Max Grünberg will give an input on the Hacker Ethic and the similarities of the first generation of hackers at MIT with the Quantified Self Community. The idea is to pick up the Hacker Ethic as a first starting point to come up with something like a Tracker Ethic. But does the Quantified Self even need a Tracker Ethic? How could it look like? And who is in the position to define it? After the presentation we‘ll split up into small groups and discuss different ethical aspects and gather the results in the plenum.
Everyone is invited to join the discussion. Come by and debate with us!
