Queens Nature Adventures

We will meet on Sunday 07/12 at 11am outside the stone house bathrooms, west of the main parking lot in Alley Pond Park, right by the soccer field.

This will be a 2 hour guided walk where we will explore the beautiful woodland of Alley Pond Park. We will learn to identify many native trees, including Northern Red Oak, Black Oak, White oak, Red maple, Black locust and others.

We will also look at interesting plants that grow in these woods, including the beautiful Purple Flowered Raspberry which is flowering right now. Of course, we will stop and try to identify any cool fungi and mushrooms we might see.

People of all ages are welcome! Bring water to stay hydrated!

The cost of the 2 hour walk is $25 per adult. Children under 18 are free. Cash or Zelle / Venmo is accepted.

We will be exploring Alley Pond Park on a guided 2 hour walk. I will talk about the trees and herbaceous plants that grow in these beautiful woods. We will also learn to identify mushrooms that we come across, and we'll discuss the role they play in this forest ecosystem.

If we're lucky, we will see some Purple Flowering Raspberries in bloom. I've seen a few here and there.

After the recent rain, more mushrooms are starting to come up, including Amanitas, Russulas and even some Boletes (see the photo of the cool blue-staining bolete I saw in Alley Pond Park on July 11th).

We will probably see the Wood thrushes, with their brown speckled bellies, and we'll most definitely hear their ethereal, metallic songs!
