Queer Global Heritage Lab – Exhibition Co-Creation at Chiswick House

Details

Join us for a creative workshop at Chiswick House & Gardens, exploring the often-overlooked histories of queer & people of colour/global ethnic majority in heritage spaces. This event is part of the Queer Global project, a project celebrating the cultural heritage of LGBTQ+ people of colour and queer migrants in West London.

Historically, grand estates like Chiswick House were spaces of power and exclusion, often inaccessible to marginalised communities. Together, we will reimagine and reclaim this space by engaging with its history and making our own mark through storytelling and art. The work we co-produce will be exhibited at Chiswick House and Gardens in Autumn!

Workshop description:
These three workshops are a chance to reflect on and express aspects of your queer heritage and identity through a variety of creative and visual arts activities. We'll be thinking about a range of themes to help generate ideas for visual artworks. This will include approaches to narrative and storytelling in art and the idea of a 'personal mythology'.

Workshops are hands on! You'll be making using a range of materials and processes. However, no prior experience of making art is necessary – just an interest in exploring aspects of your life and identity creativity, in a supportive and inclusive space.

Through the three workshops, you will:
• Learn how to paint on silk; designing and completing your own large composition.
• Practice a range of experimental art making practices, including filming on analogue 16mm film
• Learn about a range of artists who make work based on aspects of their identity.

Works created during the workshops will be on display at the museum later in the year.

All materials are provided.

Facilitator:
Mahenderpal Sorya is an artist whose practice spans a broad range of media including moving image, sculpture, painting, performance and social engagement. Mahenderpal is also a lectuerer on BA Fine Art at Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London.
