January QLBC - The Barefoot Followers of Sweet Potato Grace
Details
🥔🏳️🌈📚 QUEER x POTATO BOOK CLUB & POTATO POTLUCK 📚🏳️🌈🥔
January’s meeting will be hosted by Kasey & Julie, who after conducting an exhaustive literature review spanning several weeks, discovered that queer potato books are alarmingly rare, but not nonexistent. This meeting is the result of their groundbreaking research.
Join us at Kasey’s house in Bay Village for the delightfully chaotic discussion and potluck celebrating sapphics and spuds in all their glorious forms. The address will be sent to confirmed attendees closer to the meeting.
To help you systematically choose our main read, please consult the Queer x Potato Literature Graph in the header, which plots each book by two key academic variables: queerness and potatoeyness intensity. From subtly potato-coded characters to “the lesbian is literally a potato,” we have representation across the spectrum.
📖 Main contenders:
“The Barefoot Followers of Sweet Potato Grace” by Megan Okonsky
“Harvest Dreams” by Jacqueline Fein-Zachary
“Love & Other Disasters” by Anita Kelly
And the winner is: The Barefoot Followers of Sweet Potato Grace!
✨⛷️Bonus, short, unhinged side read that is totally optional but at the very center of our extremely specific Venn diagram
“My Lesbian Twice-Baked Potato Ski Instructor Eats My Ass” by Chuck Tingle.
You are encouraged to bring a potato of any kind to share, whether it’s your signature gourmet potato dish, vodka (yes, it counts), or even just a bag of chips. We welcome all potato manifestations and potato-adjacent foods!
Please drop a comment with what you’re bringing so we don’t end up with 12 bowls of mashed potatoes and no pierogies (though honestly that wouldn’t be the worst timeline).
Come hungry. Come queer. Come ready to discuss queer literature and potatoes like the carb-loading scholars we are.🥔🌈
