## 1. From Ochos to Ganchos & Barridas
Find the delicious possibilities hiding in the circular ocho.
What happens when an ocho doesn’t simply finish—but keeps traveling, changing direction, and inviting the free leg into the conversation? In this playful exploration, we’ll move from circular ocho cortadas and free-leg exercises into ganchos and barridas, discovering how to create these dynamic movements through connection, timing, and playful use of space.
Come explore how a seemingly simple ocho can become the beginning of something much more surprising—and delicious.
## 2. Forward, Around & Through
Circular ochos meet alternating forward sacadas.
Take your forward ochos on a journey. We’ll explore forward extensions and circular ochos, then use their natural momentum to enter alternating lead-and-follow forward sacadas.
This workshop is about discovering the conversation between two dancers: how one body creates space, how the other responds, and how the roles can seamlessly exchange. Expect spirals, flowing changes of direction, and that wonderful tango feeling of “I didn’t know we could do that!”
YOUR INSTRUCTOR
Jurni Roco is an experienced Argentine Tango dancer, teacher, and DJ whose approach to tango is grounded in musicality, connection, curiosity, and the freedom to explore both roles.
A longtime dancer and teacher, Jurni leads and follows and brings that perspective into the classroom, encouraging dancers to become more responsive, creative, and comfortable with the possibilities within the embrace. Their workshops combine clear technique with playful exploration, offering dancers practical tools they can take directly onto the dance floor.
Jurni is also an eclectic and adventurous tango DJ, blending traditional and alternative music to create tandas that invite dancers to listen, connect, and discover something unexpected. Whether working with classic orchestras or exploring music beyond the traditional tango canon, their goal is always the same: make people want to dance.
For Jurni, queer tango is a natural expression of what makes tango so compelling—the opportunity to move beyond prescribed roles, meet one another with curiosity, and create something together in the moment. She is coming fresh from DJing at the Full Spectrum tango festival in Oakland, performing in Mendicino, and teaching regular classes in Grass Valley.
What is Queer Tango? Read about the global Queer Tango definition on Wikipedia. I embrace the term 'queer' because it embodies the spirit of freedom and equality from the LGBTQ culture, promoting playful negotiation and safety and respect for all genders, orientations, and styles where anybody can invite anybody to dance and in either role. This is not an exclusion of traditional male (lead only) with female (follow only) culture. It is simply a desire to increase accessibility to those who don't fit that culture neatly and explore a more liberated way and dance expression. The point is to improve access to the tango for queer identified people and explore what is possible within each pairing. You don't have to be queer to attend a queer tango practica. We love integrating with all kinds of dancers and encourage you to come and expand your dance with us. However, we ask people attending queer tango practicas to participate in role switching as you can and dance with all genders.
