QUEER TANGO
Beginner SeriesThis queer tango class series is perfect for both returning students and curious newcomers ready to step into the embrace. We'll continue building a strong foundation in Argentine tango—reviewing essentials like the walk, cross, and ochos—while expanding our vocabulary with barridas (foot sweeps), molinete (circular turns), cadencia (rocking rhythm), paradas (intentional pauses), and playful sandwichitos.
We'll also begin exploring adornments—the expressive flourishes that let your personal style and musicality shine. And as always, our focus includes the values at the heart of queer tango: role-switching, active following, and collaborative leading.
Open to LGBTQ+ dancers and allies, this class offers a supportive space where you'll deepen your technique, grow your confidence, and discover new ways to connect through the dance.FOUR 1-hour group lessons

Nicole Roberts has been dancing Argentine Tango over 20 years in dozens of cities all over the globe. She has won a silver medal at the Gay Games twice: in Cleveland and in Paris. While living in Buenos Aires for over 3.5 years she was able to study with her favorite teachers. Her philosophy prioritizes enjoying dance study and adapting the traditional dance for our current needs and culture as well as the individual, all while building community and making friends. - Queer Tango Beginner Class Series (4 of 4) + PracticaYoga One, San Diego, CA$25.00

Where: YogaOne, 1920 Fort Stockton Dr, San Diego
Cost: $20 per person (cash or Venmo), free street parkingWhat is Queer Tango? Read about the global Queer Tango definition on Wikipedia. I embrace the term 'queer' because it embodies the spirit of freedom and equality from the LGBTQ culture, promoting playful negotiation and safety and respect for all genders, orientations, and styles where anybody can invite anybody to dance and in either role. This is not an exclusion of traditional male (lead only) with female (follow only) culture. It is simply a desire to increase accessibility to those who don't fit that culture neatly and explore a more liberated way and dance expression. The point is to improve access to the tango for queer identified people and explore what is possible within each pairing. You don't have to be queer to attend a queer tango practica. We love integrating with all kinds of dancers and encourage you to come and expand your dance with us. However, we ask people attending queer tango practicas to participate in role switching as you can and dance with all genders.
