Can Conflict Be Healthy? (Free Discussion)
Details
Most of us were taught to avoid conflict. Keep the peace. Don't make it weird. And if a disagreement gets heated, that's a sign something's gone wrong.
But what if that's backwards?
Often the people we argue with the longest are the ones we respect the most - or trust enough to tell the truth to. And when we refuse to engage, we aren't always protecting the relationship; sometimes we're protecting our own egos from the vulnerability of being called out, or truly known.
As the saying goes, the opposite of love isn't hate - it's indifference.
Tonight at Questions That Matter, we're exploring the idea that healthy conflict might be part of a litmus test for intimacy. That real fighting - the kind that doesn't end with someone walking out the door - requires patience, honesty, and a willingness to drop the armor and look more deeply, not just at the other person, but at oneself. To look past the initial sting of confrontation and fight for connection rather than against the person.
We'll be asking what separates a disagreement that makes a relationship stronger from one that quietly ends it. And we'll also be exploring questions and prompts such as:
1. How did the adults around you handle conflict when you were growing up? What did that teach you, and how does it still shape the way you fight today?
2. We tell ourselves that walking away from a fight is about "protecting the relationship" - but how often are we just protecting our egos from discomfort?
3. Is there a fight you keep having with different people? What does that tell you it's really about?
4. Not all conflicts resolve cleanly. How do you know when to keep working through a disagreement versus agreeing to disagree - and staying close anyway?
5. Is there a fight you won that you wish you'd lost?
As usual, the goal of the night isn't simply to agree, disagree, or learn. It's also to connect through genuine, lively, interactive discussion and, potentially, to go to some of the unexpected and uncharted places that deep and free conversation can take us.
Since we started Questions That Matter, between 25 and 50 people have joined us weekly. When we wrap up, we hope you'll mingle and exchange numbers. Additionally, every week many of us go for dinner and you're very welcome to join us. As polarized as the world is right now, one of the deepest connections still available to human beings is a shared meal.
Whether you're in Chiang Mai for a short visit or you're a long-term expat, we hope you can join us - not only to explore the deeper questions but to make new connections and friendships.
If possible, please support the venue, 4Seas, by purchasing a beverage or a snack. They're kindly providing the space for us at no charge.
See you on Wednesday.
