Every love song, every movie, every algorithm all assume the same thing: that romantic love is the ultimate goal of life. Find it, and you've made it. Lose it, and you have failed at life.

But what if that paradigm is bankrupting us?

The ancient Greeks identified at least eight distinct forms of love — romantic love, deep friendship, chosen family, unconditional care, playful connection, enduring commitment, love of self, and obsessive love — and treated romance as just one of them. Not the crown, but just one piece of a larger architecture.

This Wednesday, we're asking what actually happens when we look honestly at our lives. Which loves are keeping us functional, grounded, and human? Which ones are we neglecting because culture told us they don't count as much?

For tonight’s Questions That Matter, we’ll be exploring questions such as:

1. Which of the eight Greek loves (friendship, chosen family, unconditional care, playfulness, enduring commitment, self-love, romantic, and obsessive) feels most important in your life right now? Which one feels most neglected?

2. When has a non-romantic love hurt as much to lose as any breakup — but nobody treated it that seriously? What made the grief harder because there were no rituals for it?

3. To what degree is sex itself—independent of emotional intimacy—a form of love for you?

4. If you honored your non-romantic loves with the same energy culture tells us to put into romance — what would change?

As usual, the goal of the night isn’t simply to agree, disagree, or learn. It’s also to connect through genuine, lively, interactive discussion and, potentially, to go to some of the unexpected and uncharted places that deep and free conversation can take us.

Since we started Questions That Matter, between 25 and 50 people have joined us weekly. When we wrap up, we hope you’ll mingle and exchange numbers. Additionally, every week many of us go for dinner and you’re very welcome to join us. As polarized as the world is right now, one of the deepest connections still available to human beings is a shared meal.

Whether you’re in Chiang Mai for a short visit or you’re a long-term expat, we hope you can join us—not only to explore the deeper questions but to make new connections and friendships.

If possible, please support the venue, 4seas, by purchasing a beverage or a snack. They're kindly providing the space for us at no charge.

See you on Wednesday.
