Elizabeth Hardwick was born in 1916, in Lexington Kentucky. She studied at Columbia, concentrating on writing and was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1947. She published in Harpers and various periodicals and pursued a long career as a writer and professor.
She wrote three novels spread out over 34 years. We'll start with her third novel, Sleepless Nights (1979).
Sleepless Nights is an account of a woman looking back on her life, the parade of people and the shifting backgrounds of place, memories, letters, and dreams. This lyrical novel is considered Hardwick's best work.
