The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek by Kim Michele Richardson is historical fiction about a little known group of people that once lived in the hills of southern USA. This heartbreaking, powerful story of a woman struggling to bring hope through books to the far-flung families of the Kentucky hills during the mid 1930's. FDR's New Deal included a program called the Pack Horse Library Project. Cussy Carter is one of the women employed by the Project. While her father fights the injustice of the coal mine company, battling black-lung and cave ins, Cussy risks her safety on her route. Trigger warnings: The poverty and prejudice is intense. There are several disturbing assault scenes, rape, and forced medical experimentation, and some grisly descriptions of injuries. Yes, it's a tough read at times. It is a part of American history I feel has been nearly lost, and a very important story to remember. Cussy's strength makes it all worth it.
