Join us at Berkeley's Pacific Film Archive when we see Barbs, Wastelands by Portuguese director Marta Mateus, who will speak at the screening. Also on the program are two short films by celebrated Portuguese directors João César Monteiro and António Reis. NOTE: It is recommended that you purchase tickets in advance.

"Marta Mateus’s first film is a cinematic expression of the power of traditional storytelling—the 'legends, songs and stories of the Alentejo . . . known and said by heart' she heard as a child. Made with children and workers from the region, Barbs, Wastelands reflects the struggle for agrarian reform. It screens with the first film of João César Monteiro, a portrait of the poet Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen. Filmed with her children in Portugal’s sunny Algarve, it has the spontaneous quality of a home movie. António Reis’s documentary Jaime tells the story of Jaime Fernandes, who became an artist after being admitted to a mental institution. Discussing the film, Reis told Monteiro in an interview, 'I’d be happy if the film was considered just as a pure work of film archeology, since most of his work has disappeared.'" — Pacific Film Archive
