What we’re about
Write, Play, Move is a different kind of writing group. We welcome poets, fiction writers, writers of memoir or anyone who loves to write.
You should join us if you are interested in how the body shows up (or doesn't) in your writing in terms of both what and how you write-
-if you want to write more, or want to write with others as a way of staying connected to your practice, or
-if you aren't sure what happens in your body (or in your characters' bodies) when you write.
We will come together for movement, write together, have a chance to share experiences around being in a creative space together and/or what we are knowing about embodied writing, and we will end with movement and optional free time to connect.
This will not be an ordinary writing group, though we are all (mostly) ordinary people who love to write. Come prepared to give and receive and leave feeling more alive. Loosely informed by practices from The Writing Warrior, by Laraine Herring, as well as insights from Writing from the Body by John Lee, in this group we will get out of our heads (and chairs) so we can get into our writing.
Come willing to move, willing to share openly, and willing to be changed. Come prepared to co-create principles around safety in the space, and be willing to uphold a safe container for expression for all bodies. This group welcomes all bodies- of differing abilities and sizes and colors, sexualities and genders.
Ideally, after a time learning to be in this fertile format, we will rotate leadership as the hope is to build a collaborative and horizontally led space.
Feel free to read the books mentioned above or offer your own suggestions to the group!
Location will vary but may be a local library, community space, church or outdoors setting (so we can walk before we write!) when the weather is warm. Generally expect to meet within a 15 minute drive from the Watchung/Plainfield NJ area.
