Yes, we did this part of the trail in June already! But we just keep hearing about more breweries and it's such a nice trail.
We will start at Hanover Junction Train Station on the Heritage Rail Trail and ride south for about 10 miles to New Freedom, PA. There we will stop to sample the food and brew at Vortex Brewing, just a block or two off the trail. From there, we'll turn around and head back to Hanover Junction. On the route back we may make a return visit to Gunpowder Falls Brewing , known for their wonderful German beers, and/or Alecraft Brewery.
Going from Hanover Junction to New Freedom will be on a slight uphill grade, about 350' over 9 miles, so it will be hardly noticeable. Of course, the second leg would then be slightly downhill. The trail is in very nice shape, all crushed limestone and most bikes will be fine. Street bikes with razor thin tires, however, may not be ideal. The trail is shaded and follows the Codorus Creek. If you are new to the trail, it is very scenic, a nice and easy ride. It might be a bit hot, so make sure you bring water.
The start time of each ride is the time we expect to hit the trail. Please make sure you get to the Meetup location before start time. Give yourself enough time to get your bike off/out of the car and ready by the start time (at least 15 minutes). Especially in summer, it’s too hot to stand around waiting for late arrivals to get ready. If you’re running late, please message the group on Meetup so we know whether to leave or wait a bit.
