Long listed for the Booker Prize, the narrator in Stone Yard Devotional experiencing feelings of despair in her life in Sydney, withdraws to an isolated convent in rural South Wales. Through contemplative journal entries, she describes her internal experience; the women and life of the convent; and the reaction to three major events "tests" that impact the community. "These tests throw up all kinds of possibilities: about how we might live with the damage we’ve done, about how there might be solace and even meaning in service and observance, about how though we are broken, we might still be of use."
